In sporting circles it’s often said that the best form of defence is attack. Business is no different. The sure way to survive and flourish in challenging times is to continue to focus on growth through the most appreciable asset in the business - people.

Choosing to kill the goose that lays the golden egg is a flawed strategy, and one made time and again in total ignorance of the truth – that in times of economic downturn the performance of people is the key differentiator. Poorly equipped managers attempting to wring greater productivity out of employees by stronger metric measurement and harder work will achieve the very opposite.
Leadership is essential at any time, and is critical in uncertain times . A leader understands there is untapped talent at his or her disposal, and by coaching for performance to unlock creativity, the people of the organization become the epicentre of the solution, not part of the problem. So once again it’s the axis of influence, the behaviour of those responsible for performance through people, that will make or break the business, more so in difficult times.

Conventional thinking in a downturn leads to a common over-reaction in business leaders who switch their thinking from creating growth to the reduction of cost in the name of survival. Whilst sensible business practice attempts to eliminate any inefficiencies and slack established in periods of economic expansion, the danger is when the focus on cost reduction becomes the primary intention of the leadership team, so often the default setting in organisations led by economists. Cuts are often made far to near the bone, often severing newly formed muscle of great potential, and the very first ‘cost’ to be eliminated is that of developing talent within the business. dark half the dvdrip
One thing is for sure, companies that choose to follow the herd by still operating within the industrial-age paradigm where capital equipment is listed as an asset and people as cost will find business increasingly difficult in the modern economy.
